Localize Your Life - Photo Essay

This photo series was featured on two popular Atlanta blogs in September 2008: Creative Loafing & Pecanne Log.

My parents live outside of Chicago and my sister lives in Brooklyn. I was trying to describe the 'no-gas situation' was a reality here. A visible reality. I'm not sure if they really understood the impact of what that meant without seeing images. After an extended search on the internet for proof of the situation, I decided there were not many good photos documenting the state of things here.

So, I set out to document the city's empty gas stations in the Atlanta Metro area. I ride a bike. I use a Canon Rebel XTi.

I hit as many of the city's gas stations as i could, from the north, south, east, and west. I managed to hit 10 stations. I did not find any gas.

My intent in doing this was to (A) highlight a very serious reality for those who still drive cars, and (B) get everyone to start strategizing personal plans for life post-oil. This is simple thinking here...it's not time for finger pointing, it's a time for personal strategy. Setting up your life so that you can walk or bike to live, work, and play makes you independently mobile. This translates into greater independence for the NATION.

From a personal standpoint, I met a few interesting people along the way, including making a new friend named Andrew at the Best for Less on 10th and Northside. Andrew works at a children's hospital in Midtown where he helps children in psychiatric therapy. I described to him why I was taking pictures of the gas station sign. As I left, he said "go change the world".

All of the gas stations on this night had no gasoline. The shortage was palpable.
